Goal Setting – 1 of 6 – Your Point A

This is the first part of a six part video series in achieving any goal that you may have.

In this video we cover the importance of knowing where you are today so you can start to build that road map to where you want to be.

First off, before we even start I must state that all goals must be written down. Anything just in your head will most likely just stay there. But, a written goal is critical in any goal achieving process.

Let’s continue with today’s actual lesson…

Let’s assume I were to blindfold you, load you into a helicopter and then dropped you off in the middle of a field. I then gave you a compass, a map, and 5 hours of drinking water. I then told you that you were 4.5 hours away from being back on a base where the only civilization in the entire area resided. What would be the most important thing that you would need to know?

If you think about it for a moment the answer should come to you. The answer to that question is where you are on the map. This would be your Point A. If you know where you are right at this moment then you can plan your path to get to the base, also known Point B.

The problem is that in many instances when someone wants to achieve a goal they fail completely at determining their Point A. They have a destination in mind (in the previous example this was getting back to the base) yet they first of all don’t know where they are now nor really even know how to get there. The path will be discussed in a later training video/audio/blog.

You may think why would it be so hard to know your Point A. Well, let me ask you this. Do you know anyone who wants to lose weight yet will refuse to get on the scale today? Or someone who wants financial independence yet hasn’t balanced their checkbook(s) in over a month? Or someone who wants a successful business yet has failed at even deciding what business they want to be involved?

This is why knowing Your Point A is so vital. This is a no nonsense actual look at where you are at this precise moment. This is non-judgmental. This is just a recognizing where you are at this moment. Then you can create a path to your final destination. I am not saying the path will be easy or hard, that is for you to decide depending on where you are now and where you want to be.

Let’s look at this from a perspective you may be familiar with. Have you ever used a navigation app or system on your car to find a place you are seeking? Maybe it is in town or not. Before arriving at your destination you must first tell your GPS system where it is you want to go. The GPS already knows where you are at. Then it gives you the route to get you to your destination.

Now here is the critical factor in using a GPS. If you have to reroute or if you miss your exit the GPS automatically recalculates how to get to the destination using a different route. So knowing where you are today is the first step in any goal achieving process.

I hope this first step in the 6 step process in achieving any goal has been helpful. You can find other blogs, podcasts, and videos of this and other subjects by following one fo the links below.
